The Guide to Rainbow Reef
About Rainbow Reef Aquatics
Rainbow Reef is a fishing / breeding cross over. Fish are caught via Xundra's Fishing System and can be bread for new variations. Fish live in fish tanks, require food but do not get sick or unhappy (they will breed if above 75% hunger).
Fish do not die, but retire at age 120.
Getting Started
Basic Aquarium kits can be bought, but they do not include fish - starter fish need to be caught! You can catch some basic fish at any fishing spot, but the interesting ones are available at certain locations at certain times, and come via bonus crates.
Once you've caught some fish (the ones you want are the ones that come in bags, not the shoulder pets), you will want to add them to an Aquarium.
First, rez your aquarium (if you bought the starter kit, rez it in edit mode, as it comes with some decorations). Next rez your fish bag and click it. The server will send you a fish, and the fish bag will disappear.
Rez the fish, and touch it to initialize it. Then touch the fish again, and touch the aquarium, and the fish will move into the aquarium and start swimming around.
Your fish will get hungry though, so you will want to feed it, feeding is done automatically, but you need to load the food into the tank. Simply rez your fishy flakes, touch it, then touch the aquarium to transfer the food from the fishy flakes container into the tank.
Your fish will now eat when they are hungry, and grow up, and have fish eggs! However fish eggs are hard to get out of the tank, so that's where the egg attractor comes in. Rez it near your tanks, and any eggs that are laid, will transport themselves into the egg attractor.
Breeding
Breeding is simple in Rainbow Reef, any male fish and female fish can mate to produce an egg. Likely, you will get a copy of either the mother or father. However, if you ensure your fish are of the same kind, there is a chance to make a new discovery! A fish of the same kind, but a variation (different texture).
Discoveries are exciting, but only the first player to discover a variation will get the discovery, but rediscovering, or discovering for yourself is still fun!
The Chopping Board
Sometimes you might get a fish you don't really want. Well, you can chop it up and use it's guts for chum points! Yay!
To chop up a fish, rez your chopping board, touch a fish, then touch the chopping board, the fish will disappear, and you will be awarded some chum points. Chum points are calculated on how old the fish is, at age 0, it is worth 20 points, then one additional point a day up until age 120.
The Big Fish
What can you do with chum points? Well, they get you the big fish! Big fish require a mega tank (which is also purchasable via chum points). Mega Tanks can hold both big fish and ordinary fish, don't worry, your big fish like fishy flakes too and wont eat the little fish.
Big fish currently include Sharks, Dolphins and Sting Rays and a starter is purchasable via chum points for each kind. Big fish can mate with little fish, so if you want to breed sharks, it can be more economical to breed a shark with a little fish until you get another shark egg, then breed the sharks together. Breed a shark with a little fish? What a crazy idea!
Addendum
Rainbow reef is a fairly simple breedable game and is almost entirely inworld - apart from the plumbing that connects the fish bags and eggs to the servers that gives the fish. This means, there is no web portal, and no re deliveries. If you lose a fish, it stays lost unfortunately (though it may be possible to replace it depending on the circumstances).
It's meant to be a fun game, collect the fish and visit your favorite markets and catch some new fish while shopping for your breedable of choice.
